About Us

Dream Vaccines Foundation is a United States 501c (3) public charity established by Mymetics Corporation, a biotechnology company that has devoted its research to the development of vaccines against infectious diseases such as HIV1/AIDS and malaria.

Vaccines will play in the universal fight against two of the most deadly diseases in the world...a world where approximately:
  1. 33.2 million people live with HIV
  2. 2.5 million people became newly infected with HIV in 2007
  3. 2.1 million lost lives to AIDS in 2007.2
  4. 300 to 500 million people suffer from malaria, causing an estimated 1 to 2.7 million deaths every year 3
According to the International Aids Vaccine Initiative's 2007 report Why the World Needs an AIDS Vaccine, "IAVI estimates that – even assuming that other programs for treatment and prevention have been scaled up – an HIV vaccine could substantially alter the course of the AIDS pandemic and reduce the number of people newly infected, even if vaccine efficacy and population coverage levels are relatively low" A reduction in infections will also save additional billions of dollars in treatment and care for both diseases. Vaccines also make a significant impact on overall public health as well as create economic benefits for marginalized underserved and impoverished4 populations, especially in developing countries currently devastated by these diseases.

Both Mymetics and Dream Vaccines Foundation share the same set of core values; vaccines are a basic human right and should be researched, developed, and made available to all populations. However, vaccines are inaccessible to many groups of people and populations in the world mainly because they are:

  • Not affordable due to high prices
  • Not available due to inefficient distribution systems or
  • Not suitable due to geographical strains and clades of some viruses

The underlying reason for this inaccessibility is low economic interest to research and produce vaccines for neglected diseases due to high research cost and low commercial return. In addition, some research approaches tend to be biased due to funding or political sway while other unconventional yet promising research approaches remain under funded and unexplored.

For all the reasons listed above, an enormous health and economic disparity exists between groups of people who have access to vaccines and those who do not. Sometimes this disparity is geographical but mostly economical. (For definition purposes we call these groups of underserved and impoverished populations.)

Dream Vaccines Foundation aims to play a significant role in the fight against HIV/AIDS and malaria by financing and leading unbiased vaccine research and development that include unconventional yet promising approaches using the latest biotechnology knowledge and methods. Our funding research will focus on neglected infectious diseases, including specific strains and clades of these diseases that are prevalent among underserved and impoverished populations. Currently our projects focus on HIV-1/AIDS and malaria vaccines but we hope our vaccine portfolio will increase with the development of biotechnology research and projects in this area.

Because we believe that access to vaccines is a human right, we will also ensure that vaccines reach underserved and impoverished populations at an affordable price regardless of location, market limitations, or ability to pay.
1 Two subtypes of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infect humans. HIV-1 is the most life-threatening, relatively easily transmitted and is the cause of most of the HIV epidemic globally. HIV-2 is less transmittable than HIV-1, not life-threatening and is largely confined to West Africa.

4 Definition of underserved and impoverished populations - Segments or groups of populations who do not have access to the vaccine market due to the vaccine being first and foremost unaffordable but also unsuitable to their strain and/or unavailable in their region under normal market conditions.
